Hi, nice of you to read this new blog. This week we're taking a closer look at the spencer. Spencers are all the rage again this season. Now with fall, they are ideal to spice up your outfit and make it a little warmer.

The history of the spencer

The spencer, a sleeveless sweater, is very handy to have in your wardrobe. The spencer is also called a debardeur. This comes from the French word débarder, or ships unloading. They used to be worn by dock workers because this way your torso stays warm but you don't get sweaty armpits. The spencer became a fashion item because Prince Edward wore one in 1921 and the garment became fully accepted after that.

As it often goes with trends, the spencer has also gone away and returned a few times. Still, it remains a nice item to have in your closet. Nowadays you see the spencer in all shapes and sizes. V-neck, round neck, turtleneck, collar, with or without buttons or zipper: anything goes!

How to style the spencer

You can go either way with the spencer. For example, wear it over a blouse to add a nice twist and some extra warmth to your outfit. You can also style it over a dress or just wear it loose as a top. A turtleneck underneath is always a nice idea.
