Sustainable jeans from Mud Jeans
Mud Jeans is a Dutch jeans brand founded in 2012 by Bert van Son. His 30 years of experience in the fashion industry gave him a lot of knowledge. He wanted to do things differently in this polluting industry and founded Mud Jeans. His mission is to change the polluting fashion industry by starting with the most popular garment: the jeans. This is because they use a lot of chemicals and an awful lot of water. At Mud Jeans, they do all this differently. No dangerous chemicals are used and as much as 6523 liters of water are saved per pair of jeans.
Materials Mud Jeans
Mud Jeans uses GOTS-certified organic cotton instead of the polluting conventional cotton. Organic cotton has the least impact on the environment and the people who wear it. In fact, no pesticides or insecticides are used. Also, Mud Jeans does not use leather patches as many jeans brands do. Mud Jeans uses printed labels instead. In addition to organic cotton, the jeans consist of 40% recycled cotton from old jeans. Currently, recycled cotton is more expensive than newly produced cotton, so that makes it impossible to make jeans 100% circular. Mud Jeans is working hard on this challenge though and will show the world that they can create a fully circular denim brand.
Fair production and good working conditions
Mud Jeans is produced fairly. The newly produced cotton is made in Izmir, Turkey. The recycled cotton comes from a factory in Alicante, Spain. They specialize in mechanical recycling of denim and with the help of this company, the jeans can be recycled and incorporated into the new jeans. Then the cotton yarns are dyed in Valencia, Spain. Here they use dyeing methods that do not use harmful chemicals. After dyeing, the yarns are woven into a fabric cloth. Then the cloth moves on to the final step, assembling the jeans. This is done in Yousstex International, Tunisia. Then the jeans are washed and transported to the distribution center in Nieuwegein in the Netherlands. All employees in the jeans chain work under good conditions and are paid fairly.
Certifications
Mud Jeans has several labels. For example, the jeans are fully PETA Vegan Approved. Furthermore, the new cotton used for the jeans is GOTS certified. In addition, Mud Jeans has the B-CORP seal of approval which verifies environmental performance, transparency and accountability. They are also affiliated with the GRS (Global Recycled Standard). They set requirements for the recycled parts of the jeans. Lastly, MUD Jeans is affiliated with Cradle 2 Cradle. They evaluate the total life cycle of a product.
