The origins of the Sophie Stone party dress

In Sophie Stone's 9 years of existence, we didn't find her-the perfect party dress. The sustainable brands we source from hardly offer party dresses because they are often made of sequins or glitter = (new) polyester. So last year we decided to develop a party dress ourselves. Our starting point was a day of trying on, together with fashion designer Meike Nieuwenhuis, all the party dresses in Utrecht. This was a year ago. Now, 12 months and lots of actions further, our party dress is available to order!

Why a festive wrap dress?

During our research, we discovered that the wrap dress is the most versatile and flattering design for every body type. The fit adapts to any figure and offers endless possibilities for both women with size XS and XXL. Therefore, the wrap dress became the starting point for our design journey. With the idea of a wrap dress with short sleeves, v-neck and a length to the knee, we went in search of an eco-friendly fabric.

Luxurious and eco-friendly

Fabric choice played a big role. We looked for materials that could combine luxury and sustainability. We ended up with a beautiful blend of Ecovero and Cupro. This fabric falls beautifully, feels luxurious and is kind to the planet (because natural and biodegradable). Ecovero is a sustainable alternative to viscose, sourced from renewable wood resources, while Cupro is made from residual fibers from cotton production which minimizes waste. With this, we knew we could design a dress that looks great without having a negative impact on the environment.

The perfect color

Another important step was choosing the right colors. We wanted to find shades that would flatter everyone regardless of skin color, hair color or eye color. Where we initially thought of a one-color dress, next came an example of a two-tone dress. Totally Sophie Stone, so we were sold. Next it was a matter of combining the right 2 colors with each other. After considering different color combinations, we chose turquoise and purple. These two shades suit many people and they enhance the festive look of the dress. Since not everyone likes two colors in 1 dress, we also added the options of an all purple and all turquoise dress.

From sketch to dress

The dresses are made by Atelier Jungles in The Hague. After the drawn design, we developed the final model with them. We started with the idea of making both a long and a short dress, but after much deliberation we decided to go for a midi dress, with a subtly extended back and a slit in the front. This gave the dress an elegant and flowing look. After six different samples, in which every detail was perfected, we arrived at the final end result: the Sophie Stone deest dress. Besides being fair & locally made and produced as sustainably as possible, we also wanted to market an inclusive dress. This is why the dress is available in sizes XS through XXL. This way everyone can feel confident and beautiful in our latest dress.
