What is modal fabric l Sophie Stone

What is modal fabric?

Modal is a natural and vegetable material made from the wood pulp of the beech tree. The beech trees used for the production of this material grow in special, sustainably managed forests in Europe (e.g. in Austria). The trees do not need to be planted artificially (the beechnuts that fall from the trees grow into new trees) and they do not need artificial irrigation. Modal is manufactured by the company Lenzing, which also Tencel produces.

Modal clothing

Clothing made from the material modal feels wonderful because it is super soft. In addition, modal clothing is very strong, breathes well and falls beautifully. Dyeing modal is a lot easier, and thus more durable, than cotton. Modal clothing can also withstand washing better and retains its colour longer than cotton, for example. Modal and lyocell are similar. In terms of sustainability, the production of modal requires 10-20 times less water than cotton. Modal resembles the sustainable material lyocell, which scores even better than modal in terms of production process.

Modal washing

Always check the care label before washing a (modal) garment. If a garment consists of a blend of modal and another material, this may influence the washing instructions. In general you can wash modal at all temperatures but it is best to wash it at the lowest possible temperature. For example, wash at 30oC with a mild detergent and similar colours. After washing, take your garment out of the washing machine as soon as possible to avoid wrinkles.
