What is Merino Wool? | Sophie Stone

What is Merino wool?

Merino wool is wool from the Merino sheep. This wool is seen as the highest quality sheep wool there is. The wool is very soft and has a fine structure (a Merino sheep has ten times more hairs per square centimetre than a normal sheep). Moreover, this wool does not itch.

Organic Merino Wool

The Merino wool garments you find in the Sophie Stone collection are sourced from organic Merino sheep. This wool is GOTS-certified and no mulesing takes place on the sheep that the wool comes from .

Merino wool clothing

  • Temperature regulating: merino sheep live in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations. Their wool is able to protect them from both great heat and extreme cold. The wool will take on the body temperature when worn.

  • Does not absorb odours: In contrast to cotton, merino wool does not need to be washed often and hardly absorbs any odours. A little airing is often enough to keep the garment fresh again.

  • Moisture-absorbing and breathable: Merino wool has the ability to absorb moisture and transport it to the dry side of the fabric. As a result, it always feels dry and comfortable.
