What is vegan leather?

Vegan leather, another word for synthetic leather replacement materials such as PU or PVC, has been around for a long time. But since there are now plant-based leather alternatives such as apple leather and corn leather. The alternative to animal leather, vegan leather has almost the same properties as animal leather.

The main reason for fashion brands to use vegan leather is that an animal no longer has to suffer to make a beautiful coat, bag or shoes. An example of this is microfibre leather. The material feels the same as leather, is super strong and, unlike animal leather, is easy to clean and hardly damages at all.

PETA-Approved Vegan label

PETA stands for People of the Ethical Treatment of Animals and is committed to protecting animal rights in all kinds of sectors, such as the meat industry, laboratory animal laboratories, but also the clothing industry. You can recognize vegan fashion, including vegan leather, by the PETA-Approved Vegan label, the seal of approval that no animal substances may be used in the production. This label is important because animal materials are often used in clothing and accessories, sometimes unnoticed. Is there a PETA label on the label of your garment? Then you can be sure that it is completely vegan.

Benefits of vegan leather

  • Prevents animal suffering: vegan leather is always completely animal suffering-free.
  • Longevity: even though animal leather is also a material with a long lifespan if you maintain it properly, vegan leather often lasts even longer. This is because vegan leather hardly damages when used and is easy to keep clean. This allows you to enjoy your favorite bag or accessory even longer.

Products made from vegan leather at Sophie Stone

At Sophie Stone you will find, among other things, for vegan leather. We do our best to select the most beautiful, fair clothing brands for you. For us, the most important thing is that clothes are produced under the right conditions and do not involve children's hands. We think this should go without saying. A garment cannot be 100% sustainable. That is why we choose slow fashion brands that consciously think about how they can make their production process more sustainable. Every season we see progress in our favorite slow fashion brands, and encourage their sustainability process!

Do you also prefer vegan leather? Then we recommend the shoes from our slow fashion brands Ecoalf, ACBC and Veja , among others. ACBC & Ecoalf exclusively use vegan leather for their sneakers, and Veja also has some models with this material. Are you looking for a nice bag made of vegan leather?
