Hi, nice of you to read this new blog! Each week we highlight an item from our collection and this week it is the lumberjack shirt.

The history of the plaid shirt

The lumberjack shirt originated in the 1950s but it wasn't until the 1990s that the plaid shirt became super popular. The plaid pattern is officially a Scottish design, which became particularly popular among American cowboys and farm workers (such as lumberjacks) because of its fine fabric.

The lumberjack shirt was made of flannel

Originally, flannel shirts were made of wool. Today, they are mostly made of cotton or polyester. At Sophie Stone, sustainable shirts are made of 100% organic cotton. People often think of flannel as a material, but in reality flannel is a weaving technique. Thanks to this weaving technique, you get a soft fabric with a layer of down on top.

The lumberjack shirt as a fashion item

The lumberjack shirt is back in our closet after all these years. You can go in many different directions with the cheerful plaid shirt. The timeless pattern of the shirt ensures that it can be combined in many different ways. Wear it with jeans and your outfit is immediately ready.

How to style a lumberjack shirt

With this shirt, as mentioned earlier, you can go in any direction. To get you started, we have listed a few combinations below:

  • If you want to go for a casual look, pair the lumberjack shirt with jeans. If you want to go more toward the formal side look at chinos or slacks.
  • If you want something more than just a shirt, try wearing it open with, for example, a nice shirt, sweater, hoodie or neckline underneath. This way you can combine the shirt endlessly. And the extra layer provides a little more warmth.
  • To add an extra twist to your outfit, you can also throw or button the shirt over your shoulders. This gives your outfit just a little more dimension.
  • Another thing we see a lot these days is print on print. You can of course apply this with this item as well. For example, wear the shirt on pants in a matching color.
