What is sustainable swimwear made of?

Almost all swimwear is made of polyester, or plastic. This is because of the properties of polyester: it dries quickly and is elastic. A bikini made of cotton, for example, would quickly become lumpy and fall off your bottom. In the year 2018, 359 million tons of polyester were produced worldwide and in Europe alone, some 62 million tons of plastic were made in that year. These are huge quantities and these numbers are increasing every year. So it's high time to reduce the production of plastic and invest in the alternative: reuse existing plastic!

Sustainable swimwear is therefore often made of rPET: polyester made from recycled PET bottles. One of the great things about using rPET is that it does not require the extraction of petroleum, which is needed to produce new plastic. In addition, rPET production uses 59% less energy , emits 32% less CO2 and requires less water.
