How do you wash your Mazine coat? The complete guide to long-lasting coat happiness
Help!!! You just bought a beautiful new Mazine jacket, but how do you make sure it will still look great five years from now? Or maybe you've had a favorite Mazine jacket for years that could use a refresh? No worries - with the right care, your coat will stay beautiful for years. After all, a coat that is well cared for won't need to be replaced anytime soon - and that's truly sustainable!
First things first: what material does your Mazine jacket have?
Before you throw your coat in the washing machine, it is super important to know what material it is made of. This is because Mazine makes coats from different materials, and each material requires a different approach. Always check the washing label on the inside of your jacket first!
Most Mazine jackets are made of 100% recycled polyester - especially their popular puffer jackets. These jackets often have a water-repellent coating (DWR) that needs special attention.
Sophie Stone tip → Take a picture of the laundry label with your phone! That way you always have the instructions at hand, even if the label fades or you accidentally cut it out.
Step-by-step washing instructions by jacket type
Washing Mazine softshell and technical jackets
For puffer jackets with water-repellent coating, follow these steps:
- Preparing: Close all zippers, Velcro and snaps. Empty all pockets (check those small inside pockets, too!) and turn the jacket inside out. This protects the outside from damage.
- Temperature setting: Wash at 30-40°C - never hotter! Higher temperatures damage the water-repellent coating and can melt the synthetic fibers.
- Choosing the right detergent: Use a special Tech Wash detergent for technical clothing. Never use fabric softener - it clogs the pores of the material and destroys the water-repellent layer. Powder detergent is also not a good idea; opt for a liquid variety.
- Wash program: Choose a fine wash program with low speed. Spinning too hard can damage the structure of the fabric.
- Extra rinse: Add an extra rinse to make sure all soap residue is gone. This is especially important for maintaining breathability.
Washing Mazine denim jackets
Does your Mazine jacket have a cool denim look? Then these rules apply:
Denim jackets actually need very little washing - only after about 10 wears, or when there are really stains on them. This keeps the color nice and prevents unnecessary wear.
When you do wash: use cold water (30°C maximum) and turn the jacket inside out. This will prevent the color from fading. Always wash your denim jacket separately or with other dark colors - especially the first few times color may still come off. Use a mild detergent for dark laundry, such as Woolite Darks. A dash of white vinegar in the rinse water helps to fix the color.
Never put it in the dryer! Hang your denim jacket on a sturdy coat hanger, out of the sun. Direct sunlight will cause the color to fade.
Organic cotton Mazine jackets care
For coats made of organic cotton, such as some of Mazine's summer models, care is fairly simple but important for longevity:
Wash at 30°C with a mild, ecological detergent. Organic cotton is often a bit more sensitive than conventional cotton because it has been produced without chemical treatments. Use the delicate wash cycle and a low spin speed. Again, washing inside out protects the color and structure.
For drying, you can choose: hang on a coat hanger (best for shape) or lay flat on a drying rack. In the dryer is also allowed, but only on low temperature and take the coat out when it is still slightly damp.
What you should absolutely avoid
This will keep your jacket looking its best for the longest time - the biggest no-goes when washing Mazine jackets:
Washing too hot is perhaps the biggest mistake. Temperatures above 40°C shrink or even melt synthetic fibers, destroy water-repellent coatings, and cause colors to fade. Even if the label says it's allowed - prefer to wash at 30°C to be on the safe side.
Fabric softener is the enemy of technical fabrics. It clogs the pores, preventing your jacket from breathing and destroying the water-repellent layer. For a softer coat, use a dash of vinegar in the final rinse water.
Powder detergent often does not dissolve well in cold water and leaves white streaks on dark coats. The granules can also remain in the fibers, especially on technical fabrics.
The wrong drying method can also do a lot of damage. Puffer jackets in the dryer without tennis balls? Then you get lumps of padding. Denim in the dryer on high heat? Shrinkage guaranteed. Hang a wet coat in full sun? Faded spots are the result.
Tips for maintaining quality
Maintaining the water repellent layer
Do you notice that water droplets are no longer beading off your jacket but pulling into it? Then it's time to reactivate the DWR coating! First, wash your jacket according to the instructions above. Then tumble dry for 20 minutes on low heat - the heat reactivates the water-repellent coating. No dryer? Then blow-dry gently over the jacket, or iron with a low temperature and a tea towel in between.
If this no longer helps, you can apply a new layer of water repellent with a spray such as Nikwax TX or Grangers Performance Repel. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.
Treating stains without washing the entire coat
No need to immediately wash the entire coat for one stain! Treat stains as soon as possible - the longer they sit, the harder they go away.
For grease stains (from food, for example): Immediately sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on top and leave for 15 minutes. Gently brush away and treat with a small amount of dish soap on a damp cloth.
For mud: Let dry completely first, then brush away the dry dirt with a soft brush. Often this is enough! If a stain remains, dab with a damp cloth with mild detergent.
For coffee or wine: Dab directly (do not rub!) with a clean cloth. Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric. Then treat with a mixture of water and white vinegar (1:1).
Sophie Stone tip → Keep a small bottle of stain spray in your bag during festivals or parties. First aid for stain accidents!
Maintaining zippers and hardware
Struggling zippers? Rub them with a little candle wax or special zipper spray. Always pull zippers closed before washing - this prevents them from warping. Metal details such as buttons can be polished with a soft cloth. See rust? Treat with a little lemon juice on a cotton swab.
Storing your coat: here's how to do it right
Seasonal Storage
Mazine jackets are often seasonal - you don't wear your thick winter puffer in the summer. Before storing: always wash or air your coat first. Even if it appears clean, skin oils and odors can attract pests.
Store winter coats in a cotton garment cover (not plastic - that can cause mold) with a few cedar balls against moths. Hang them on a sturdy, wide coat hanger that supports the shoulder shape. For puffer coats: you can also store them in a large cotton bag, but don't compress them too much.
Summer coats can hang in your closet year-round, but give them room. Closets that are too full create creases and poor ventilation.
Always use good hangers - preferably made of wood or with shoulder padding. Wire hangers leave unsightly bulges in the shoulders. For heavy winter coats: invest in extra sturdy hangers that can handle the weight
Refreshing your coat between washes
Your coat smells a little musty but isn't really dirty? Then hang it outside in fresh air - not in full sun, but in the shade on a windy day. A few hours is often enough to get rid of odors.
The sustainable choice: why good care is important
Mazine is committed to sustainable fashion with recycled materials and fair production. By taking good care of your coat, you contribute to that yourself! A coat that lasts twice as long cuts your environmental impact in half. Plus, you save money because you don't have to keep buying new clothes.
Washing at lower temperatures saves energy. Washing less often (only when absolutely necessary) saves water. And by treating stains locally rather than washing the entire coat, you reduce the release of microplastics - especially important with synthetic fabrics.
Sophie Stone tip → Start a "laundry diary" for your favorite garments. Write down when you wash them and with what program. That way you'll learn what works best and avoid unnecessary washes!
